I had a wonderful weekend! I celebrated fathers day with my family and other friends! I spent some time on my iMovie, but I got stuck because I couldn't get a VCR player to get Mrs. Cusick's footage. Anyway, I am excited to show my video too the whole class, at the same time i don't want too because I want it to be a surprise!? I am happy there wasn't any reading!!! I miss though... Last week of the intensive!!!!!!!!!! I hate that!!! Why can't it be longer? I am sorry this is all that I could say hope to blog more over the last week.

I am sorry I was not in class yesterday, but guess what I am definitely coming today! I checked the calendar, but did not see any homework. According to my sister, we were to read the passage again since not a lot of students read? Also I did part of my voice over narration. I did not have a very fun morning until 12:45 pm. I had this head ache which was generated by my eyes. Unfortunately, I was suppose to interview Mr. Burch yesterday, however he fell BACKWARDS!!! I called him and he said he would love to do the interview, but we will have to do it on Tuesday. After that, my sister and I went down to the Baranoff Museum "SOAKED" to interview Ms. Angeli Grantham. I worked part on my iMovie for about an hour last night. I will be working on it again today. That was my day.

Again, the reading was horrible! Well as I kept reading, I realized that there are times when I have to learn to understand that not every reading is for me, but also for others. Since I hated the reading, I did not really understand the reading, but there are some place I understood it. The first sentence was great, how it compared Eastern Europe, Soviet Union and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. The reading didn't relate anything to my topic. I am sorry to say IT WAS NOT GOOD, but I truly understand.
I am excited for tomorrow because I have an interview at 2 pm with Mr. Al Burch. Another heads up if anybody wants to join meet me at the library at 1:30. Also I am excited to go back to class and show Ms. Marie my iMovie!
Today at the class was another great day. Doing researches individually helps a lot instead of me doing it at home. I have not really spent much time on my iMovie, although you could see i have done a lot (literally)! I look forward to working and interviewing more people for my iMovie now and over the week end. Something interesting today was the Unknown Diary. It is just so sad how we do not know who's diary it was, but it is also good since there are a lot of personal stories logged on the diary.
iMovie is 5 mins long already I hope you will allow me to add more? I'll show you tomorrow Ms. Marie if it is boring or not! Night...

Another amazing day spent at the public library. Spending time doing research on our own topic was good! I got to finish most of my iMovie. I got more notes, however there was a slight problem i forgot to get the names of the books I gather my quotes from, but guess what I will soon.
In my opinion, the reading was long and rather boring! Most of the reading we have been reading all relate like the introduction talks about how the spill made this much spill cause by captain Hazelwood. One thing that saw from the reading is the introduction. It talked about the recovery of financial and emotional problems. It makes me think back to the racing we read a couple of days ago.
Another heads UP! I have another interview of Thursday at 2pm! Mr. Al Burch. I called 7 people today, but unfortunately non of them answered except Mr. Burch. He informed that he wasn't a part of the clean up physically, but his boat was. I any one wants to join me with this interview, you are welcome too comment bellow. Mr. Al Burch is a Kodia Fisherman according to our reading.

Today was a very tremendous day! The class was full of
wonderful detail. The interview with Ms. Eismann was AMAZING! I got another
view about my topic. I will surely use her in my video. Ms. Katie’s little
class was very informative and I will be looking forward to teaching Ms. Marie
about what she taught us today!
The reading. The introduction had such a powerful impact to me. It had such devastating quotes in the beginning. I continued to read on and as I read, I saw names from the reading that live here in Kodiak. For example, Trisha Gartland and Bruce Barker. Unfortunately, They both were not home so I had to leave the message to Mrs. Gartlands husband and Mr. Barker’s wife. LOL I was shocked to have read that from the public hearing people came to watch it in person. They arrived from cars, planes and boats! I thought over 250 people that went would be a lot, but according to Ms. Raft she wanted MORE! And well I would agree. A powerful response from a fisher man was from Mr. Brian Johnson.
“After
about three days of sitting there ( on the boat) with (bad) weather, looking at
oil on the beach, we, said we are out here to clean up oil and to do something,
and we don’t give a damn what exxon thinks at this point. So the four of us did
hit the beach and we took about a ten-mile area an we knocked out 10,000 pounds
of almost straight oil. And it was just four people. And you look what exxon
and their huge systems what would it have taken to go hit an area. It was
incredible, the machinery and helicopters and landing barges and skiffs, and
whatnot, just do what four people in a ten-foot rubber raft could do on their
hands and knees with buckets.”
-Brian
Johnson, Fisherman
I got to interviews done today from my uncle Fred Berestoff
and Mrs. Cusick. Mrs. Cusick’s interview was incomparable to the rest. The
first time I asked her she totally didn’t remember about the fact that she
volunteered. She helped with the clean up by washing birds at the armory! I
never knew there was a bird clean up too! Her story was terribly sad. Although
they may have cleaned a lot, more have died!
I have more to say,
but that’s about it for today!

The homework for the weekend is actually exciting. Although I have not gotten my interview done, I will do my blog post! I asked my intervee yesterday about being video and his answer was I would more than love to be interviewed, but is there any other way you could do it instead of video? I suggested him We can probably take your voice? With that suggestion, he agreed. Eventhough i won't be using the video, I will be able to take the audio out, THANKS to my computer "talent." I also have another interview with Nathasha Berestoff Haydn today. I will let you guys know tomorrow how it goes.
Reading was shocking the City Borough Mayor Jorme Selby was not in town when the spill occurred. He was attending a conference in Juneau. The conference received a message saying there had been an accident, but they did not really put a lot of thought in to it. For the rest of the reading, I am sorry to say I can't really comment about it right now. I will try to finish it by tonight.
Imovie
The iMovie made my week wonderful, but maybe not the next following week. I have put a lot of effort on Mr. Sullivan's clips, but the problem is I may have to change it.
It was a very enjoyable/ medium 1st week of this intensive. Well I know it will get more "intense" since it is called summer intensive! I look forward to the last 2 weeks left.

Ms. Black’s interview seemed really LONG! Although it was long, I am hoping that the recording will be useful for my video. When I got home, I had trouble looking for a part that I needed, but unfortunately it wasn’t recorded! A really weird part of Ms. Black’s interview was the camera turned off when she yelled “TURN OFF THE VIDEO CAMERA!” this part was when she was on the cargo boat. I found it really weird because I never though the camera would be able to pick up sounds and automatically turn off. I really enjoyed interviewing Ms. Black although she really goes deep with a topic. Anyway today’s class went by really fast.
The reading was all right it informed about physiological and social distress and how you can get a terrible trauma after a horrifying disaster. The oil spill can be describe in one word according to my understanding “STRESS!” One word that stood out to me on the reading was “spillionaries “ It made me laugh how creative the writer is. This word was created because some businesses lost money while some just made A LOT! I learned that in some smaller communities like all natives, almost all adults that still function worked on cleaning up the MESS. A quote that stood out to me is “ Home has not only changed in people’s minds, it has also been changed by the experiences of the oil spill and clean up itself.

I really enjoyed today! It was wonderful to have interviewed Mr. and Mrs. Stanford. I got some information from their experiences about my topic. I also loved how the reading for tonight was really short, but really interesting. Since my Ms. Eisemann is a teacher at the school, I never thought she would have been a fisherwoman at that time. She really cares about our nature from what she informed us about on her quick story. Al Burch's story provided us about a big lesson including an information that we can do anything to prevent an oil spill, they are going to happen again and next time we shall be more prepared. Unfortunately, Dennis Knaginstory was sad. He waited for money, but in the end he earned nothing. Stacy Studebaker was a teacher at that time so i never got to meet her, but would love too! I can't imagine opening a salmon can with the smell of oil!!! GROSSSS.....
Anyway from Dawn Black's video, I has struggles watching it at home because it takes along time to load and i tried to download it, but it took along time too! In the end, i got it to work. I was a little confused at the beginning. I thought she was going to talk, but it was only pictures. From my understanding, the building that lays across the teen center down town was known as "Katmai National Park & Preserve." and the buildings here in Kodiak had the Veco sign on their window. At the end of the video Ms. Black was at a building with other people and there was a map and from what i heard they were trying to figure out how to get a person out of an island. I watched the part from the site not downloaded.

Library Tour
Ms. Katie's tour around the library gave me a wider idea on who I should be using the library. For instance, I never knew about the Alaskana room's books were not able to be checked out. I also enjoyed touring for a little bit because Ms. Katie is really informative. (Drill in?!)
Ms. Angeli
She was funny (salsa?!) I learned more informations from her that Ms. Marie has talked about, but she went deeper.
Tonights Reading
First of all, I learned that to read the article, you need to use a little bit of a help from the dictionary. I found some words that I did not know the meaning such as, persona, deception, and others. Second of all, I learned a new word Ethnographers. From this article I learned a bunch of new information about collecting data. You have to record as much as possible! You need a lot! When you are taking notes, it is crucial that you write them down immediately so that you won't forget any of the details you will need. Finally, I found that using electronics vs writing is arguable. When you use a device and not take notes, you can not record the smell and things you can see. If you use a sound recorder, you can not see the physical movement, body language and the rest from the top. So from this electronic devices are not always the best choice.
Overall, from my understanding of the first part of the article it is providing me with a lot of advices about using powered devices and how they could ruin an interview. Remember older is always better!

Back to the Exxon Valdez
Today was the first day of Summer Intensive and I totally enjoyed it! Although it was only the beginning of the class, we already got an interview done (Toby Sullivan.) Mr. Sullivan's interview was very informative and I learned various different about the oil spill that occurred in 1989. For example, according to Mr. Sullivan the oil spill traveled to Kodiak before the salmon season began. Another detail that I did not know about the spill was they had an oil clean up and from my understanding, the Exxon hired Vecco to manage the clean up.
From Mr. Sullivan's story, I also learned more information about the spill. "Alyeska's plan claimed that they would recover 100,000 barrels within 48 hours, but by March 26th, less than 3,000 barrels were recovered." Animals such as birds and marine animals were also greatly affected. Countless birds died and marine animals such as the sea otters had to suffer from the deadly oil that covered their skin. Because of the oil spill, a fishing season for the fisherman's had to be canceled. Fishermen's boat had to be repaired and money were funded for them, billions of dollars. In the end, there was no way the monstrous spill could all be eradicated because it has has expanded in such a gigantic area.
